For as long as we have existed, the dichotomy of Heaven and Earth has offered structure to the universe and our place within it. Earth is the literal ground beneath our feet, and provides sustenance and support for billions of people. It’s a tactile thing, and it’s our home. The cosmos and its mysteries, however, are quite the opposite. Spectacular mythologies have been inspired by the night sky and its constant yet roving constellations. Natural weather phenomena—like lightning, tornadoes, and hurricanes—have incited both reverence and panic. Eclipses, comets, the auroras, and other heavenly events have not only instilled awe in our ancestors, but remain equally wondrous to us today.
This is what makes the recently discovered Book of Miracles (Das Wunderzeichenbuch) so spectacular. Completed in 1552 in Augsburg, Germany, the richly illustrated manuscript records our desire to make sense of the heavens though prophecy and signs. Beginning in 73 BC and continuing into the 1500s, every page is a dedicated to a different notable otherworldly event. The scenes are vibrantly painted in dense gauche, and take mystifying, terrifying, and even humorous creative license in their depictions.
Our Nacht pattern is the simplest interpretation of this wondrous manuscript. The etherial star spray is a gentle homage to the universe around us, and the beauty of its mysteries.
